Things to do in Paris: Brandon Deener’s “Resonance” at Galerie 75 Faubourg

One of the greatest things about a beautiful summer day in Paris is walking around and discovering the art galleries around, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré like Galerie 75 Faubourg.  Where I discovered Brandon Deener’s “Resonance” an exhibition for Los Angles-based artists with his exhibition that is all about jazz and Afrofuturism. The paintings are acrylic and spray paint.

This highly anticipated exhibition showcases fifteen of Deener’s large-scale oil paintings. The talented artist eloquently highlights the harmony of combining distinct elements in music, painting, and interpersonal relationships. Opens with a stunning depiction of the ecstasy of jazz culture, as seen through the portraits of jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and a vibrant crowd of Tennessee teenagers.

Things to do in Paris

Los Angeles-based artist Brandon Deener’s first solo exhibition in Paris, featuring 15 large-scale oil paintings. The title highlights the striking result of combining more than one element— within music, painting, and among people, with a particular emphasis on the splendour and pleasure of jazz, as seen in the focused expression of Miles Davis playing trumpet (Sketches of Miles [all works 2024]), the vibrant depiction of John Coltrane with two saxophones (Soprano and Tenor), and the tightly packed crowd of Tennessee teenagers blowing various brass instruments (The Aristocrat of Bands).

One of the largest canvases in the exhibition, Players of the Horn, gives homage to Jean-Michel. Basquiat’s Horn Players, 1983. Both paintings feature jazz legends Charlie Parker playing sax and Dizzy Gillespie playing trumpet. In Deener’s work, the musicians are loosely rendered wearing pastel suits, while the abstract background of dark washes conjures the more dreamlike, emotive world of music.
