Puppets and Puppets Spring Summer 2024 Runway Report

Voila, the emerging design house of Puppets and Puppets Spring Summer 2024  Runway Report, is the New York-based fashion label founded in 2018 by Carly Mark and Ayla Argentina. Now run solely by Mark. The collection was primarily inspired by Creative Director Carly Mark’s experience over the past two years. She describes feelings of self-reflection, being tormented by memories, and what it feels like to process emotions in today’s society.

Puppets and Puppets Spring Summer 2024

“I feel like there are so many moments for women in New York City, tough days when communication leaves you feeling haunted for a while.” As a Native New Yorker, you can feel this way often while walking in the meat-packing district in the wee hours of the morning, so we get it.

Puppets & Puppets navigates the duality of womanhood in New York, embodying the necessary bravery to ride the subway and walk the streets for its Spring/Summer 2024 collection. Creative director Carly Mark effortlessly infuses her two-year self-reflection and introspection for New York Fashion Week, delivering a collection that is as haunting as it is beautiful.

“Inspiration for this season also came from vintage paranormal photography. Photos of séances and mediums from the late 19th and early 20th century. They claimed truth through photo tricks, suggesting ectoplasm, or ghost substances, being released from their mouths and ears,” says Mark.

Stripping back one’s wardrobe to reincarnate is a key to change. This can be seen on the new overly ripe bananas wrapped in leather and worn as handbags – no longer a traditional “status symbol,” but rather a simple status adornment.

Haunting & Beautiful

Puppets & Puppets SS24 collection makes me wonder if Carly Markes is into astrology and paying attention to all the signs that we are returning to worshipping the Divine Feminine. The collection explores what it’s like to be a woman in the city, capturing a spirit of fierceness and empowerment with bold patterns and dramatic silhouettes. Vintage paranormal photography also adds to the eerie vibe of the line, incorporating imagery of séances. Experimental tailoring elevates classic staples, nodding to the rebirth the wearer experiences with a wardrobe change.

The Spring/Summer 2024 runway show featured a slow jazz performance by Jazz Ajilo, a beloved New York City subway performer, with his signature dancing stuffed animals. Models walked amongst Jazz’s tiny dancers while he played Lady in Red on the saxophone. This is what it feels like to be a woman walking through the subway, holding her head high.
