PUMA Mostro at New York Fashion Week

Kicking off New York Fashion Week, Puma celebrated the return of the original 1999 Mostro sneaker in a transformative, futuristic way. The sportswear brand presented its collection at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, featuring guests like Emily Ratajkowski and Ashley Graham in the front row. The ambience was set with laser-like lights, boasting a romantic, sporty feel to match the return of the old (but new) Mostro.

Although the German company showcased a mix of custom and commercial pieces, the reimagined Mostro sneaker, seen in various colourways, is the show’s star, with the clothes coming in as supporting actors. Marked by its spiky sole and accessible strap closure, the show is named after the Italian word for “monster.”

The highly anticipated relaunch was announced months ago, though it’s only being revealed now, much to the delight of sneakerheads. Following the announcement of A$AP Rocky joining the Puma x F1 collaboration as creative director, the rapper is also the new face of the iconic sneaker.

As the bass from the subwoofers boomed through the Park Avenue Armoury. The PUMA show was themed around a carnival gone wrong. An empty Ferris wheel slowly rotated. The chair swing ride hit the spin cycle with mannequins strapped into the seats wearing a rainbow of Mostros.

The drip of the day was featured on all the models strutting the runway wearing monstrous iterations of the sneaker in candy colors. This was fashion futuristic sportswear street style ready.

The Mostro will take many forms in 2024, including the traditional OG low cut, The knee-high Mostro Alto, and a laceless iteration. Released in 1999 as a hybrid between two archival PUMA silhouettes. The Mostro is still futuristic 25 years later. Retro yet progressive, the Mostro is unapologetically PUMA thanks to its unique asymmetrical lacing setup and futuristic aesthetic.

PUMA are going all-in on the Mostro in 2024, and their bet is already paying off. Undoubtedly, the Mostro will be in heavy rotation on our social media and your IG feeds. This will be a #sneakerfreakfriday sneaker heavy rotation this year—comfortable, light, urban street-ready with a feminine touch.
