Maria Grazia Chiuri Announced To Leave Dior

On May 29, 2025, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the creative force behind Dior womenswear, officially announced her departure from the iconic, beloved French fashion Maison.

Over her nine-year tenure at Dior, Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri brought a distinctive voice to the Maison. Appointed in July 2016, Chiuri had already built an impressive résumé, beginning her career at Fendi in 1989 as a handbag designer, before moving to Valentino in 1999, where she rose to the role of co–creative director alongside Pierpaolo Piccioli in 2008, who was just newly announced as the creative director for Balenciaga.

At Dior, Chiuri ushered in a modern sensibility while staying true to the romantic legacy of Monsieur Dior himself. Her debut Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-To-Wear collection set the tone for what was to come, anchored by the now-iconic white T-shirt bearing the statement: “We Should All Be Feminists.”

A simple yet powerful message signaled not just a design direction, but a bold feminist narrative that would define her creative leadership and continue to inspire women around the world.

After nine years under her reign, rumors of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s departure from Dior grew stronger following her latest haute couture presentation. The Dior Fall 2025 show, titled “Les Fantômes du Cinéma,” was a surprise spectacle, as the official fall couture season was scheduled for July 2025.

Although officially categorized as Dior Cruise 2026, the collection was a true couture show. Chiuri’s exit was subtly hinted at by the eye masks worn by some models, a clear reference to Kim Jones’ own farewell collection, which also featured similar masks.

“Les Fantômes du Cinéma” paid homage to the ethereal spirit of classic Italian cinema and the opulence of historical costume balls. In pursuit of inspiration, Maria journeyed through Tuscany, immersing herself in the artistic legacy of Villa Reale di Marlia. The Dior show took place in the majestic gardens of Villa Albani Torlonia, where guests dressed in white inviting them to honor her Roman heritage and birthplace.

The show concluded with a standing ovation. Dreamlike silhouettes, intricate craftsmanship, it was a beautiful show, was this truly the end for Maria at Dior? Just a day later, Dior confirmed the long-speculated news: Maria Grazia Chiuri would officially step down.

What’s Next For Maria?

The Italian designer who birthed the iconic Dior Book Tote, advocated femininity and put women, both on and behind the scenes at the core of her work. She uplifted female artisans, collaborated across cultures, and shaped a vision of Dior that honored its heritage while challenging convention.

For that, Maria Grazia Chiuri deserves her ovation. She fiercely protected and reimagined the legacy of Monsieur Dior with sincerity, intellect, and unwavering femininity.

“Women, with their intuitive instinct, understood that I dreamed not only of making them more beautiful, but happier too.”

In a male-dominated industry, Maria’s nearly decade-long leadership offered more than inspiration it provided assurance. Proof that a woman can not only occupy such a role, but thrive in it, without compromise.

So what’s next for Maria Grazia Chiuri? Could a return to Fendi where her fashion journey began in 1989 be on the horizon? Or will she embark on a new creative chapter altogether?
