ÉTUDES STUDIO PRESENTS RÉSONANCES: A SONIC WARDROBE AT IRCAM

On Tuesday, January 20, the Parisian concrete of the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) became a playground for the ears and the eyes. Études Studio unveiled its Collection No.28, titled Résonances. As a New Yorker, I’ve seen my share of “cool,” but this was something different. It was a cerebral, deep-bass dive into the intersection of sound and silhouette.

The collection draws a direct line from John Cage’s minimalist chance experiments to the early 90s emergence of Intelligent Dance Music (IDM). It feels less like a runway show and more like a sensitive map. Études Studio—true to a name that evokes musical practice—treated the garment as a space for conceptual investigation.

Key Trends, Colours, and Textures

The palette explored deep blacks, cool greys, and muted browns. However, the real magic happened in the modulations. Subtle violet nuances and psychedelic moiré effects diffused a felted, immersive atmosphere. It reminded me of Dream House, the legendary sound installation by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela.

  • The Hero Piece: A versatile collared bomber in a cashmere and wool blend.
  • The Manifesto: A fully leather ensemble that asserted a strong, defiant presence.
  • The Accessory: The brand’s first-ever developed messenger bag, debuting in leather and canvas.
  • Footwear: Cracked, Camargue-inspired boots that grounded the avant-garde looks.

Is Pharrell the Blueprint or the Outlier?

While we often discuss whether Pharrell Williams is a designer, creative, or trendsetter, Études Studio offers a different answer. They prove that being a “creative” in 2026 means navigating multiple disciplines simultaneously. Pharrell might be the celebrity face of this movement, but Études is the architectural backbone.

The Rhythm of the Wardrobe

How important is music in fashion? This season, it’s everything. In these heavy political times, the trend toward sonic-inspired clothing suggests a collective need to tune out the noise and dance.

The collection gives men a modern, casual look—not quite the traditional jazz musician, but a “soundmaker” for the digital age. Think precision cuts meet domestic comfort transposed for the outside world.
