Thom Browne Stuns at The Met Gala 2025: A Masterclass in Tailoring

Happy Met Monday! This year’s Met Gala 2025 themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” presents the perfect canvas for designers to explore the nuanced artistry of precision tailoring— a truly distinctive style, unmistakably and mastered by Thom Browne.

The 2025 Met Gala, themed ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ also explores over 300 years of Black fashion and dandyism across the African diaspora. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion, it highlights how Black communities have used tailoring and style for cultural expression and resistance.

Tailored to Perfection: Thom Browne at the Met Gala

Given the theme, it was only natural to anticipate a strong showing from Browne. His brand DNA is deeply rooted in redefining the tailored suit—challenging conventional norms and reimagining silhouettes through an avant-garde lens.

Thom Browne has long been synonymous with a modern take on the uniform, blending structure and surrealism, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to detail, craftsmanship, and construction.

1. JANELLE MONAE

Janelle Monae wore a custom Thom Browne look, designed with Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, blending sharp tailoring with theatrical flair.

A motorized monocle added a surreal touch, while underneath, she wore a deconstructed pinstripe coat, red skirt, black corset, white shirt, striped tie, and bold 4-bar platform shoes.

2. DEMI MOORE

Demi Moore turned heads in a custom Thom Browne look that reimagined the silhouette of a necktie—yes, an actual necktie!

The designer created a ‘simple’ dress with the knot of the necktie placed on her chest and the “collar” encircling above her, giving the look a majestic flair.

Remarkably, even more majestically, the ‘necktie’ was crafted from 1.4 million beads, including 22,000 black sequins, 103,500 cut beads, and over 1 million black bugle beads. In total, the piece took over 7,600 hours of meticulous craftsmanship.

3. ANGEL REESE

Angel Reese fused sport and style at the Met Gala in a bold Thom Browne ensemble, cementing her place as a fashion and athletic icon.

4. ANOK YAI

Anok Yai served hard once again on the Met carpet, drawing inspiration from old Hollywood glamour. Fabric flowers added a soft contrast, inspired by the quaintrelle—a feminine counterpart to the dandy—and muses like Minaj, with their tiny waists, perfectly suited to this silhouette.

6. LORDE

Dressed in a simple deep slate look, the standout feature was her bandeau top, which stayed perfectly in place without the need for fastening. In addition, she paired it with a simple long skirt and a blazer, styled to hang off one shoulder.”
