Darlings, Paris is officially blushing. As we lean into 2026, the Grand Palais has opened its doors to a monumental force of nature. Mickalene Thomas has arrived with her vibrant retrospective, All About Love.

Mickalene Thomas All About Love Paris

This isn’t just an art show. It is a vibrant takeover. Thomas makes history as the first African-American artist honoured with a major solo exhibition at this iconic institution.

For the fashion-forward and the culturally curious, this is the season’s “must-see” event. We went to the opening, and the who’s who of the Black Art scene in Paris all pulled up.

The Goddess of Rhinestones and Radical Representation

Mickalene Thomas is a bold, multidisciplinary artist born in New Jersey in 1971. She is recognised worldwide for her opulent, rhinestone-studded practice. Thomas reimagines classical portraiture through a uniquely queer and Black feminist perspective.
She earned her BFA from Pratt Institute and her MFA from Yale University. Her work explores the visibility of Black women in art history. She often reinterprets canonical French masterpieces, such as Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe. By placing Black women at the centre, she disrupts the historical gaze.

All About Love: A Universe of Liberation
The exhibition’s title draws inspiration from bell hooks’s seminal book, All About Love: New Visions. Thomas presents love as a transformative force for personal and collective life.

What to Expect Inside:
- Vibrant Retrospective: More than 70 works spanning two decades of her career.
- Multidimensional Practice: A synthesis of painting, collage, photography, video, and installation.
- Lush Compositions: Intricate patterns and brilliant rhinestones that celebrate sensuality and grace.
- Political Pleasure: Spaces where beauty and leisure become radical acts of self-possession.

Thomas’s subjects—friends, family, and lovers—are depicted with fierce confidence. They reclaim spaces historically denied to them. Following acclaimed runs in London and Los Angeles, this Paris presentation is her most ambitious yet.
