We Discuss Her New Single ‘Silly Love’ and her New MTV Documentary Amy Winehouse And Me: Donnie’s Story
Hello, Dionne we would like to start by thanking you for participating in our interview!
What effect did the pandemic have on your creativity?
Even though this year has been tough for everyone, especially at the beginning with the live industry being on pause, I feel that actually, it’s giving me the time to really think about what’s next. I’ve revisited lots of my music, explored other avenues I probably wouldn’t have even thought about and I guess more than anything I’m ready more than ever to push forward with a bang!
As a result of the pandemic, the past year has been challenging for us all, so we wondered how you stayed motivated throughout this period?
Musically exactly I think it’s been the best time to tap into finding music online. And really go back over all of my old archives and reconnect with music.
Your voice is beautiful and you sing with such emotion, is this something that has always come naturally to you?
I can only really write stuff that is from the heart or at least what I’ve experienced. So it is an open and honest account of my life which I please reflects in my voice.
We’re glad to hear that you have released your new single “Silly Love”, what was the inspiration behind that song?
Silly Love is about being in a relationship with someone you know isn’t right or good for you but not being able to let it go. Of course, this ends in heartbreak but I am a real believer that you grow through what you go through and one day it will all make perfect sense.
‘Silly Love’ sounds different from your previous releases. Was this your intention?
I think growth and experiences have enabled me to change my style of music, it still has aspects of my old sound mixed in with new!
Having Amy Winehouse as your godmother, and sharing such a close relationship with her, what was it like knowing her on a personal level?
Knowing Amy on a personal level was great. The Amy I knew was caring, sweet, loving, supportive and very funny.
What was the best advice Amy shared with you?
To be true to yourself and to trust your gut.
It was evident that Amy loved you and was a great supporter of your music and singing. What was it like to have such genuine support from such a talented artist?
Having Amy’s support both personally as a godmother sister figure was great. But then having her also as a mentor was incredible. How can you not listen when you are being taught by the best.
It is the first time that you are opening up and sharing your relationship with Amy in your new documentary on MTV, “Amy Winehouse & Me: Dionne’s Story.”. How did you know that it was the right time to share this?
With 10 years coming up she was more present than ever. I feel like I have never had the chance to really show the Amy I knew and it just felt like the right time. I worked with an amazing team who really understood the sensitivity around this.
In the near future, what can we hope to see from you creatively? Are there any upcoming live performances or releases?
There will be more music to follow. More singles across the next couple of months with an EP to follow… and hopefully an album in not too distant future.
