Runway Report: Tokyo James SPRING 2025 Milan Fashion Week

The Runway Report: Tokyo for James SPRING 2025 Milan Fashion Week is out and we were not impressed. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was featured on Iniye Tokyo James’s invitation for the show had us leaning and looking sidewise for a reason at the collection. “The collection’s called Imperfection. ” “Life is not perfect said the designer and we wondered if the designer was trying to protect us because he also was not impressed at what he would send down the runway.

Tokyo James SPRING 2025

Iniye’s casting was inclusive but the silluettes looked sloppy and undone coming down the runway. The makeup was meant to be sunkissed however came off comical and if another designer had the same look might have come off offensive.

SS 25 Milan Fashion Week

The designer is quoted saying that he’d inserted multiple imperfections in his garments and presentation more broadly: So would we spot them? The sunburn makeup was a straightforward starter. The beaded skirt with two skew-whiff beads and the haphazardly stitched seaming on denim, leather, and jersey were so wrong they were ugly. And were the minidresses cut so high at the back meant to show quite so much cheek? Not very Mary Quint at all. They were giving a 60’s vibe on a budget, not the African luxury that Tokyo James used to pump.

Consistent with his imperfect theme was the fact that 90% of the materials in this collection were, upcycled deadstock from sources in Benin, Nigeria, the UK, and Italy. This seems to be a theme from emerging designers like Tokyo James, however, this collection missed the mark and was average, there was no story and I felt no vibe at all. No wow pieces we are used to and no consistency at all. It failed to convey who is Tokyo James we are still trying to figure out the voice of the designer.
