Runway Report: SEAN SUEN Spring/Summer 2025 Men in Pearls

Runway Report for SEAN SUEN S/S 2025 shows us a Gender Neutral King inspired by the legendary figure of Beijing opera master Mei Lanfang. The Chinese designer was on a quest for a balance between tradition and modernity. Our favoured pieces had crowns of pearls to accent looks from the collection. Throughout his life, Mr Mei Lanfang portrayed over 180 female characters, transforming on stage into a beauty that transcended gender and social norms off and on stage.

The man mews for this collection was a handsome and elegant man. On stage, Mei Lanfang was a supremely beautiful woman. In his time he was both the creator of beauty and its embodiment. The SEAN SUEN Spring /Summer 2025 collection takes inspiration from Mei Lanfang’s ” Duel Identities” drawing from his daily attire, diplomatic outfits, and theatrical costumes.

” A great master, when chosen by the times, is already exquisite in every aspect” – Century Masters Mei Lanfang

Mei Lanfang Gender Neutral King

Renowned for his interpretations of female roles, Mei Lanfang was not only an exceptional artist but also a man of great elegance. Sean Suen’s collection seeks to embody this subtle blend of masculine and feminine that Mei Lanfang represents, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. The designer revamps traditional Chinese opera dress codes by deconstructing and reassembling them, granting them a contemporary twist.

Cloud collars, full sleeves, jade belts and other ornaments distinctive of opera costumes blend harmoniously with the tailored cuts of jackets, trousers and coats. The vibrant colour palettes of the theatrical realm meet the neutral hues of contemporary fashion, creating a subtle blend of gender codes. Each piece embodies the beauty of the Orient while meeting the most delinquent fashion trends.

Through this collection, Sean Suen pays tribute to China’s cultural heritage, while presenting a new aesthetic vision embracing a global approach. Sean Suen approaches the ‘ Mei School’ art with the hope of allowing wearers of this collection to jointly experience contemplate, and witness the infinite possibilities between classical beauty and contemporary needs.
