What is Milan Design Week?

One of  the most expansive and exhilarating events of Global design, Milan Design week 2024 (April-14-21st) once again is filled with an array of exhibitions, installations, talks and experiences across the city and with just 2 days left before it wraps, here’s a brief guide as to what it is and what to catch if you can!  

Milan is renowned for being a design district hub so explore exhibitions each offering its own unique perspective and thematic focus. Whether it’s contemporary design, artisanal craftsmanship, or technological innovation, there’s something for everyone to discover. 

Firstly ‘Salone del Mobile’ is the centre piece of Milan Design Week, a must-visit. Explore the latest trends in furniture, lighting, and interior design from leading brands and designers from around the world. This is the 25th edition  of SaloneSatellite, which will showcase emerging designers under 35. This year fulls on the year dedicated to Kitchens and bathrooms with EuroCucina and don’t miss the the American Film maker David Lynch’s installation at pavilions 5-7. Expect to feed the senses at this years fusion of architecture and neuroscience.

Notably, this year Maria Vittoria Paggini has once again opened up her doors to her private house/gallery with an interior fuelled by colour and sensuality, “Porno chic. You begin to make love”, designs are joyful, colourful, with an artistic decorative. On the other side of the ‘colourful spectrum’ be sure to check out ‘The black Box’. This week, the Belgian design brand Serax introduced its latest furniture collection by Belgian designer Bob Verhelst, a resident of Antwerp, showcases his versatility as a creative individual, seamlessly navigating between roles as a stylist, scenographer, designer, and painter.

2024 Theme “Materia Natura”

With sustainability increasingly at the forefront of design discourse, seek out exhibitions and events focused on eco-friendly practices, materials, and innovations. Discover how designers are addressing environmental challenges and promoting a more sustainable approach to design. This is particularly noted at Fuorisalone: Venture beyond the confines of the official exhibition halls and explore the Fuorisalone events scattered throughout Milan. From pop-up installations in historic buildings to design districts brimming with creativity, Fuorisalone offers a diverse and immersive experience with a focus on sustainability this year combining nature and design for a more sustainable future.

Ikea showcases an exhibition at Padiglione Visconti — Via Tortona, 58, Milano on ‘Firsts’ exploring the many ‘first-moment’ stories from people across the globe inspired by new products, food, music, and events.

Wander through the picturesque streets of the Brera neighborhood, where galleries, showrooms, and design studios come alive with exhibitions and events showcasing cutting-edge design concepts and artistic innovation. Be sure to check out the electric  Chiquita House, with it’s ‘Happy art movement’ concept where you can Dive into a pool of bananas or colour an entire room with the artist himself. Caleido Contract Café, situated just a short distance from the Feltrinelli Foundation in one of Design Week’s liveliest areas, offers an aesthetically pleasing environment perfect for Instagram. This space warmly welcomes creatives, buyers, retailers, and architects alike.
