Last week, all my Asian friends were talking about G-Dragon’s new album. I didn’t know much about him, and I realised that many of my European friends who don’t follow K-pop culture were also unfamiliar with the work of this incredibly talented artist. This week, I’ve decided to dedicate our Music Monday to him, shining a spotlight on this South Korean music mogul. Let’s discover G-Dragon together in this week’s article below!
G-Dragon is a 36-year-old music artist and fashion designer from South Korea who has recently released his highly anticipated solo album, Übermensch.

G-Dragon, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, was born on August 18, 1988, in Seoul, South Korea. He is a highly acclaimed rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer.
His journey in the entertainment industry began early, making his first TV appearance on MBC’s children’s show Bbo Bbo Bbo. At the age of seven, he became a member of the kids’ group Little Roora.
Kwon Ji-yong debuted his adult career as the frontman of the K-pop band Big Bang in 2006. The group quickly became a phenomenon, propelling G-Dragon to fame as one of South Korea’s most well-known celebrities.
From the start, his eye-catching outfits set him apart, establishing him as a fashion icon in his country and beyond. Known for blending eclectic styles, he effortlessly mixes streetwear with high-end luxury brands.
In October 2024, G-Dragon released his single POWER to introduce more people to his work as a solo artist.

To discover G-Dragon even further, I want to highlight his unique music style. He masterfully blends genres such as hip-hop, R&B, K-pop, and electronic music, creating a sound that is both innovative and distinct.
Known for his bold experimentation in production and introspective lyricism, G-Dragon seamlessly fuses rock and electronic beats with K-pop melodies. His music often delves into themes of love, fame, and personal struggles, making it deeply emotional and relatable.
In addition, one of his signature strengths is his confidence in blending hip-hop and R&B into ballads, amplifying their impact with his undeniable charisma. In fact, with his latest album—which I highly recommend—he continues to push creative boundaries, redefine his musical identity, and solidify his status as a South Korean phenomenon and industry pioneer.
