The 5 Best Sunscreens For Dark Skin Tones

When it comes to the topic of sun protection, it is not only a common skin-care misconception that sunscreen should only be worn during the warmer months of the year but, that those with darker complexions do not need to wear sun protection at all. I can safely say that both of these statements are false. No matter your skin tone, whether it is cloudy or you’re indoors or outdoors, you should be incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine every single day.

You may be wondering why this is the case considering that the sun doesn’t seem to make much of an appearance during winter but believe it or not, UV radiation from the sun is present within every season. As explained by Dermatologist, Dr Hiva, “It’s really important to use a sunscreen every day, even in winter months, because ultraviolet, which is an invisible radiation, is present all year round, even in the winter months.”

UV radiation is not only known as one of the highest causes of skin cancer but can age the skin and cause hyperpigmentation. The exposure to radiation causes damage to the skin’s DNA. That said, although those with darker skin tones have a sense of protection in the form of melanin, melanin does not guarantee that UV radiation will not do any harm. Yes, our melanin may be magical and indeed powerful, but it is not sun-resistant.

Dermatologist, Michelle Henry, states that “People with darker skin may not be more susceptible to skin cancer but when those with darker skin are diagnosed, the outcomes are typically worse because they are found at later stages.”

So, we’ve covered the importance of wearing sunscreen but let’s get into why we need to specifically talk about SPF for darker skin tones. Let’s face it, not all sunscreens are made with darker skin tones in mind and I’m sure we’ve all experienced putting on sunscreen and finding ourselves looking…ghostly. Darker skin tones need formulas that blend seamlessly into our skin, so here are five products that will do exactly that.
