When most of us hear the word “blockchain,” our minds jump straight to crypto. Bitcoin. NFTs. Wild speculation and stories of people either getting rich overnight or losing everything. For me, the word feels mysterious, futuristic, connected to money, but also shadowed by risk.

But blockchain itself is not just crypto. At its core, it is a technology: a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions securely and transparently. Think of it like a giant notebook that anyone can see, but no one can secretly alter. And that opens the door to uses that go far beyond digital coins.

I first really considered blockchain’s potential for good after a conversation with a woman I met one night in Paris. She worked for a company using blockchain to help businesses in Africa and India access investment, even when traditional banking systems had left them out. I do not remember every detail, it was a late-night conversation, but I left feeling inspired. Inspired because it reminded me that while crypto dominates the headlines, there is a whole other side of blockchain that does not get enough attention.

Why Blockchain Matters for Women Entrepreneurs

Access to capital has always been one of the biggest challenges for women entrepreneurs. According to the World Bank, women-owned businesses make up nearly 40 percent of small and medium enterprises worldwide, yet they face a $1.7 trillion financing gap. In many countries, women do not have the same access to credit or banking services as men.

Blockchain offers an alternative. Because it cuts out the middleman, it can allow women to raise funds, verify ownership, and build trust with investors directly. Imagine being a woman in rural Kenya with a great idea for a food cooperative but no bank account. With blockchain-based platforms, she could receive microloans, show transparent records of repayment, and build credibility that attracts more investment.

This is not just theory. Platforms like BitPesa (now AZA Finance) in Africa have used blockchain to help small businesses, many run by women, handle cross-border payments more efficiently. In India, projects are emerging to use blockchain for land rights, giving women secure proof of ownership in societies where property rights are often stacked against them.

Beyond Profit: Doing Good While Making Money

What excites me most about blockchain is its potential to shift entrepreneurship itself. Women do not just want to chase profit, many of us want to create businesses that do good while making money. Blockchain can help build that bridge.

• Supply chain transparency: A fashion entrepreneur could use blockchain to prove her products were ethically sourced, giving conscious consumers real confidence.
• Fair-trade verification: Women-led cooperatives in agriculture could show every step of production, from farmer to market, ensuring fair pay and honest trade.
• Donation accountability: Nonprofits run by women could use blockchain to show donors exactly where their money went, line by line.

It is the kind of win-win that feels rare in business: sustainability and profitability together.

The Barriers and the Risks

Of course, blockchain is not perfect. For many people, it still feels inaccessible, confusing, or just “too tech.” The language around it is dense, and the crypto world has made the average person wary.

My personal worry is not scams, though they exist. It is legitimacy. People want to know their money is safe, and for that, governments usually have to get involved. But once governments and big institutions step in, they bring regulation and taxation, which threatens the original spirit of blockchain as decentralized and community-driven. It is a paradox: to grow, blockchain needs legitimacy, but too much legitimacy risks watering down what made it powerful in the first place.

Where We Go from Here

So, is blockchain the future for women entrepreneurs? I think it could be. Not as a magic bullet, but as a tool that opens doors where traditional systems have shut them.

We are already seeing glimpses: women-led businesses using blockchain for cross-border trade, for microloans, for ethical sourcing. It is happening, just quietly, outside the hype.

For me, the point is curiosity. I do not know everything about blockchain, but I want to learn more. And I think more of us should. Because whether it is five years from now or ten, the last thing we want is to wake up and realize we have been left behind on another technology shift that could have worked in our favor.

Blockchain might always carry the shadow of crypto, but it is also a chance to rethink how entrepreneurship works, especially for women. It can be a way to do good and make money, to break barriers and build new kinds of businesses. And if nothing else, it deserves our attention, before the opportunity passes us by.

SCORE Bucks County’s Women Building Businesses Conference will return on June 14 after a three-year break due to the pandemic. Every year SCORE provides mentoring and workshops to over 375,000 new and growing small businesses across Bucks and eastern Montgomery counties. NBC10 anchor Tracy Davidson will make the keynote address at its fourth conference. She is passionate about sharing inspirational messages with other women. 

Event format

This year’s event will be held at Parx Casino in Bensalem. Apart from its slot machines and table games at its land-based and online casino, Parx has a venue for such events. 

Previous events featured a panel format, but this year it will feature a discussion and a Q&A session with each of the seven speakers. There will also be opportunities for attendees to network with one another and with event exhibitors. In addition, they will receive practical information they can apply to their businesses.  

The speakers and topics

Bucks County chairman Linda Zangrilli is organising the event with fellow SCORE mentors. The speakers they chose are successful women entrepreneurs. They have progressed up the career ladder and have helpful advice for other entrepreneurs.

• Tracy Davidson will share her challenges and the research-based skills that enabled her to overcome them. 
• Jennifer Gardella is a social media expert who will share how to market using social media. 
• Lynne Williams will discuss social media and the creation of a personal brand on LinkedIn. 
• Director of the certification and business development, Collen LaCoss, will discuss getting businesses certified.  
• Christina Reger, president of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, will offer human resources tips for small businesses. She is a small business owner and an employment attorney. 
• Sonya Pappas, a business owner for 30 years, is a partner in the GSM Advisory Group, a business advisory and accounting firm. Her topic will be “Know your numbers/know your worth”. 
• Melinda Emerson, best-selling author and CEO of Quintessence, a marketing consulting firm, will offer a lunchtime address. The topic will be “12 P’s of running a successful business”.

Conference details

For women who want the conference details, it will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 14. The venue is at Parx Casino East, 2999 Street Road. The cost was $25, but it went up to $35 at the beginning of May. The price includes breakfast, lunch, and a day of discussions and networking.

 1) Change your mindset

If you have a goal in mind, it’s not just a pipe dream. It’s normally something that you’ve thought about long and hard, and you know that it’s possible to achieve. But sometimes, that voice inside your head starts to whisper. It reminds you of the  worry of failure or taking a risk on yourself. This voice can lead to inaction, which is something that will hold you back from achieving your goals. Now is not the time to listen to this voice. Now is the time to recognise it for what it is: fear. Not all fear is bad, but some of it will hold you back from reaching your full potential. Some of us are afraid that we’re too old to learn new things; we’re too old to change careers; we’re too old to do anything other than what we’re already doing. The truth is everyone has different levels of comfort and abilities when it comes to changing things in our lives, but it all begins with adopting a positive mindset.

2) Explore your goals

When you’ve faced your fears, it is vital to pinpoint the end goal. This step requires you to explore in depth what might bring you career satisfaction and ask yourself questions from an internal perspective such as ‘What do you want?’ ‘When do you want it?’ ‘Who are you working with?’ Where are you working? ‘How much money do you make?’ The answers to these questions may seem obvious at first, but once they are properly articulated, they can unlock direction and clarity in your life. Once you know where you want to go, what matters most is how quickly and efficiently can you get there.

3) Network in person

A fun way to meet people in your industry is to attend events where professionals go to network and mingle. As you attend more events and talk to more people, you’ll feel more confident about your abilities and about networking in general. By communicating with people at networking events, you’ll show them that you’re professional, knowledgeable and ambitious. You may even find out about a job that hasn’t been publicly advertised yet. Do your research online beforehand so that you know which companies are going to be represented at each event.

4) Network online

There are several ways to expand your network online, but LinkedIn is one of the easiest and most effective ways to connect with the right people. A LinkedIn profile allows you to showcase your skills, professional experience, and education. It makes it easy for others to find you and gives them an idea of who you are and what you’re all about. If someone sees that you have something in common with them—a connection at a mutual business school, for example—they may be more likely to act on an introduction.

5) Know when to ask for help

When you ask questions, you’re making an effort to learn and understand. Asking will not only afford you the opportunity to get a better understanding but will also help manage your manager’s expectations and ensure that you deliver the work on time. One thing to remember when asking a question is to be specific in describing the task or issue. For example, if you were provided with a set of data, describe what the data is before explaining what you need to do with it.

6) Ask for additional responsibilities

When you show initiative and take up additional responsibilities, it will show your interest in helping your department succeed. If you find yourself with a quieter than usual workload, reach out and help in other areas. This showcases your ability to handle higher responsibilities and be a team player.

7) Show confidence

Confidence is key when you wish to excel in your career. In any line of work, being confident is essential to demonstrate that you’re an expert in what you do. Be assertive with your teammates or manager if you need support on anything you’re working on, but never display any arrogance the higher up you climb the ladder.
