Top 5 Celeb Looks: Met Gala 2014

by Tillie Eze

This year, the Met Gala focused on the career of couturier, Charles James. A man whose design process took a sculptural, scientific and mathematical approach when constructing his ball gowns. And with that, I’d like to focus on the words “ball gowns” and ask where they were this evening? Did no one get the Charles James thematic memo? I mean seriously, it seemed very few followed directions and those who did, even fewer executed it well enough to call the wrinkled dress, a gown.

Of course there are those who always know what to wear and how to wear it like Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlize Theron, and Rihanna, but there were a few others who truly caught my eye this year. The common denominator of the winners were that they all stayed at The Mark Hotel.

Here are our Top 5 Looks: Met Gala.

Bee Schaffer. The daughter of the infamous Anna Wintour, who though she said she didn’t want to work in fashion, seems to keep us on our toes whenever spotted out and about with her mother. This dress actually resembles one of Charles James original gowns.

Karolina Kurkova. Czech model known for, well, you know her. She’s been around for years, so needs no real introduction. But what does need introducing is this Marchesa beauty she was caught traipsing out the Mark in earlier this evening.

Models Arizona Muse and Liu Wen wearing ball gown constructed to dance in. Not this new age dancing that Miley brought to pop culture though it had been around for years before that… cough, cough… anyone one remember “Whistle While You Twerk”? But the dance of privilege and elegance similar to the Foxtrot or the Waltz.

And, Coco Brandolini. Fashion Editor and consultant who went from earning degrees in poli sci and philosophy to working as Assistant Designer for Oscar de la Renta. From there she worked with VOGUE, Vanity Fair, Nina Ricca, before heading the couture team of Dolce & Gabbana. Here she brings a little Venice to the Met Ball.
