Lameka Fox. Born in Washington, D.C. Ethnicity: African-American, Irish, Italian, “and probably more lol.” This up and comer is on the rise, but still enjoys summer with friends before it is time to hit the runway again in September.
After reading an article about IMG’s digital scouting campaign @WeLoveYourGenes, Fox tagged three photos of herself with the campaign hashtag, #WLYG, on Instagram. “I didn’t realize that other girls had Instagram profiles dedicated to it,” says Fox. “I just hashtagged three pictures where I looked the most natural and wasn’t wearing really any makeup.”
Less than 24 hours later, a representative from IMG contacted Fox through Instagram to ask for more photos. Within two days, Fox headed to New York, was signed, and made her debut on the Marc Jacobs resort 2016 runway a few months later.
Before the runway,Lameka Fox was in high school and Maryland native who spent her free time training horses. “I grew up in that whole racing scene. My dad trains and races Standardbred [horses]. I used to help him train and jog them,” says Fox. She bets on them too: Fox always mixes her passion for horses with fashion. “A family friend gave me a horse,” says Fox. “And I named him Versace.”
Model Crush Monday Q& A| Lameka Fox
“I didn’t realize that other girls had Instagram profiles dedicated to it,”
What was your first memory of fashion?
Lameka Fox: My godmothers Chanel brooch and skimming through Victoria’s Secret catalogs with her.
How were you discovered?
L Fox: Through the Instagram account WLYG (@weloveyourgenes). It all started with a hashtag.
What has been your favorite modeling career moment so far?
LFox: Walking Valentino and spending a month in Paris!
What do you love and hate about Snapchat?
L Fox: I love that is only lasts for 24 hours and the filters of course. I hate that I got some creepy/gross messages and had to make it private so I don’t talk to my foxy as much. 🙁
Favorite designer? To work for?
L Fox: My favorite designer is hands down Alexander McQueen, to work with I’d have to say Maria Grazia Chiuri & Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino.
What is your must have on the road beauty product?
L Fox:Definitely my Dr. Colbert Illumino Oil! It’s my holy grail for dewy hydrated skin.
What are you up to when you’re not modeling?
Lameka Fox: Getting as much sleep as possible but also making time for friends & family. I love planning random things like going to amusement parks, renting out a house out of the city for a weekend and just hanging out with a big group of friends.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
LFox: Is it cliché to say happy? At then end of the day my life is far to last-minute and spontaneous to have an expectation five years ahead of the time so as long as I’m happy I’m okay.
What model do you look up to?
L Fox: Definitely Karlie Kloss as a businesswoman she’s brilliant! But as icons Kate Moss and the legendary Naomi Campbell.
What would you change about the modeling game?
LFox: The power social media holds over the industry. Which is probably weird for me to say because that’s how I was scouted but I feel like it can be unfair sometimes. And also definitely diversity, for me especially its disheartening to know if I got the job because they like me or if they like the fact that I’m half black. I don’t want my features white-washed.
What are you listening to now?
L Fox: Shamelessly listening to Views by Drake & T.L.O.P by Ye because who isn’t? But I love so many different types of music so don’t judge me on that one.
What is the most coveted item in your closet right now?
L Fox: I just invested in a pair of Gucci sandals and I can tell I’m never going to take them off until I buy something else that is…
