Karl Lagerfeld is no stranger to an extravagant backdrop. Having previously held fashion shows with replicas of the Eiffel Tower, a life-size dollhouse and an airline, it seems only logical that Chanel would preview their Cruise 2019 show… on an actual cruise? You may have noticed the words ‘La Pausa’ on the side of the 330-foot-long ship. Named after a villa in the south of France built by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel in the 30s, the stunning backdrop majestically sat tall at the Grand Palais in Paris, a month after it was announced that Chanel would be pledging $40 million for restoration.
“I like the idea of boats” Lagerfeld explained. “Of ocean liners during the interwar period and the rest, but in real life, I like houses on solid ground with my stuff all around me. I get claustrophobic [on boats] because you feel like you’re cut off from the world,” Sounds of seagulls, foghorns and the creaking ropes set the mood for the show with the likes of Lily-Rose Depp, Kristen Stewart, Phoebe Tonkin and Margot Robbie looked effortlessly chic at the collection’s launch.
Australian model Adut Akech opened the show where ensembles adorned a nautical theme of red, white and blue in the most Chanel way possible. Sailor tops and stripes plunge vertically over blouses and skirts, striped trousers, double-breasted jackets and the classic Chanel tweed kicked off the show, paired with white tights, shoulder bags and topped with embroidered berets. Plenty of Chanel tweed suits and dresses naturally followed in dazzling hues of pink and blue relaxed cotton poplins dressed, skirts and smocked tops, silk chiffons, the crêpes de Chine and georgette, the fishnet and the crochets, all in relaxed no fuss silhouettes topped off with a classic Mary Jane pump that define a dreamy summer aura.
