Bangkok International Fashion Week: Wants to Grow South East Asia

What’s it like watching a fashion show from Bangkok International Fashion Week

Once again, Bangkok host its own Fashion Week. Being a fashion student and enthusiast, I couldn’t miss all the shows. Here, I’m sharing with you my experience and a few critics as  I have for fashion show business in Thailand.  One thing I dare to  guarantee is that there still are some rooms to grow in SEA fashion market. Don’t get me wrong, this is  good news, right people?

Let’s refer back to my first London Fashion Week experience for comparison. LFW was so hectic that I was overwhelmed by the crashing schedules, types of tickets, contacts and emails for RSVP, and the names of the designers. I remember going backstage for photos early morning, running in heals, and not knowing who to stop for  street photos because everyone looked so editorial. It was a great time. On top of official shows on British Fashion Council page, there were mini shows by indy brands, activities from fashion stores, PR agencies and so on.

Things are totally different here in Bangkok. The “fashion week” by One Siam, the three big shopping malls in Bangkok, was dominated by a certain big brands in Thailand and there’s only one stage. No crashing schedules, editors do not need to give up any seats nor run in heals. There’s no hundreds of photographers standing in front of the venue waiting for influencers to step out in their front roll OOTD. Because all shows share the same location, and some models, it takes sometime between shows to rework the runway and makeup. The second and third shows of the day were hour(s) delayed! That’s very normal for fashion show in Thailand though. I remember my very first fashion show in Thailand, about five years ago, was 2 hours late.

Here’s the two shows  we want to share with you! The fashion week started with a collaborative collection from Self Portrait and Vatanika. This show without a doubt is one of the most talked about show of this season. The reason being Vatanika just launched a youtube channel featuring her lavish life in Thailand. It was a really fun show by the way. There were lots of over the top gesture mixing with comedic monologue. I was expecting pieces that the two designer work together to form a new collab-collection. However, it looks more like the two designers only share a stage and time slot. The stylings for both designers’ work are totally different.

Next is one of my favourite. Issue by Pupavis Kritpolnara, is one of the most fun fashion brand in Thailand. Spoiler alert, you might get offended with the use of religious representations. This collection “The Day” paid attention colour, fabric transformation, and hand-embroidered beads and sequins to form a piece of art. It was told that the designer source fabric from India which offered luxurious comfort that suited Thailand’s tropical weather.
