A glittering calendar of music, sport, and cinema to enjoy on your South of France Yacht charter vacation.
The French Riviera is one of the greatest yachting playgrounds on earth, with yacht owners and charterers flocking to the azure shores each year to indulge in the Michelin-starred restaurants, glamorous beach clubs, and swanky boutique shopping. Yet it’s during the special events that the French Riviera really dazzles on a South of France yacht charter, with celebrities, billionaires and Royals hitting the red carpet and attending sporting events and music festivals. Here are five go-to events that you’ll want to visit on your yacht charter in the South of France.
Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, April
The greats of men’s tennis converge on Monaco each April for a spectacular tournament at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The matches take place on clay courts overlooking the Mediterranean, making for one of the most stunning backdrops of international sport, as sporting superstars like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer battle it out for supremacy in front of an elite crowd.
Cannes Film Festival, May
There’s simply nothing like the Cannes Film Festival, making this one of the hottest reasons to charter a yacht in the South of France in the entire calendar year. Each May, movie stars, and directors pose for the paparazzi during two weeks of film screenings, award ceremonies, and glittering parties – with the most decadent hosted on board the superyachts docked right beside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
Monaco Grand Prix, May
The atmosphere is electric during the Monaco Grand Prix, with the most prestigious viewing spot on board one of the yachts berthed right on the edge of the race track in Port Hercules. Enjoy champagne and canapes on deck as the F1 cars scream past the yacht on their way down to the Rascasse bend and kick your heels up at night in Monaco’s glamorous social scene.
Jazz à Juan, July
Drop anchor off Juan les Pins on your yacht charter, to where the strains of jazz music float out over the water to your yacht. The Jazz à Juan festival has been running for nearly 60 years, making it one of the longest-running jazz festivals in Europe, and the streets of this lively beach resort come alive each July with big-name acts playing on stages beneath the pine trees on the edge of the sparkling Mediterranean.
Cannes Yachting Festival, September
The Cannes Yachting Festival kicks off the autumn boat show season in fine Cannes style, welcoming around 600 yachts up to 55m to the palm-lined docks of Cannes. As the Med’s largest in-water boat show, the Cannes Yachting Festival is famous for its extraordinary ratio of yachts on debut, with around 100 of the yachts being unveiled by their shipyards for the first time. Of course, it wouldn’t be Cannes if there were not luxury brands involved, and the Cannes Yachting Festival delivers a glamorous range of lifestyle and fashion products in the new Luxury Gallery, as well as the latest- model supercars on display.
Monaco Yacht Show, September/October
Hard on the heels of the Cannes Yachting Festival comes the Monaco Yacht Show, one of the most prestigious events in the luxury world. Early each autumn, 120 stunning superyachts dock in Port Hercules beneath Monte Carlo’s skyline of skyscrapers and grand hotels, kicking off four thrilling days of press launches, VIP yacht viewings, and glittering parties. Over 40 of the yachts are on their world premiere here, while the displays of supercars and futuristic water toys compete for attention among the shipyard pavilions and exhibition tents. There’s an extraordinary energy to this exclusive event that only escalates after dark in Monaco’s Michelin-star restaurants, opulent casinos, and A-list clubs.
Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, September/October
This regatta in Saint-Tropez is one of the most celebrated events on the international sailing circuit, ending the Mediterranean racing season in Saint-Tropez style. Over 300 classic and modern yachts and more than 4000 sailors participate in the racing, and the sight of the sails stretched out across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez makes for one of the most spectacular sights in the sporting world. It’s the perfect event for a sailing yacht charter in the South of France.
The perfect yacht for a South of France Yacht Charter
It’s important to choose the right yacht for a South of France yacht charter, and there is an extensive superyacht fleet to choose from along the Côte d’Azur. For a glamorous entrance to one of these events, it’s hard to go past chartering M/Y SOVEREIGN, a 180′ (55m) award-winning superyacht with two master suites, a beach club, elevator, and vast interior volume and deck spaces for entertaining. Whether docking in Monaco for the Grand Prix, arriving in Cannes for the Film Festival or sitting at anchor watching the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, life doesn’t get any better than this.
