It was fortuitous that Fall 2019’s presentations were all about scaling down. As if reading the minds of women everywhere, designers focused less on overt fads and more on tightening up their collections. Practical staples like work suits and outerwear emerged repeatedly in variations of colours, cuts and fabrics—Yet each proved timeless through simple tailoring and functionality.
Even Hervé Léger—A label synonymous with short and sexy, strap-you-in bandage dresses—gave way to more forgiving (and wearable) silhouettes. Under the direction of Creative Director Christian Juul Nielsen, body-con styles were overshadowed by comfortable separates that provided freedom of motion.
Joining suit in the efforts to pare back was Yigal Azrouël. The designer swapped both runway show and presentation for a video installation. The video titled “Reflection” shed light on the process of design rather than the final outcome. Azrouël presented straightforward styles like an intriguing-yet-low-maintenance rollneck, unpretentious poet blouse and an assortment of effortless dresses (special shout-out to the sleeveless pinstripe dress worn over matching pants).
Once again, Fall’s power suits were redefined. But this time, Wall Street was calling. Plaid and checked work suits monopolized street style just as much as the runway. Pants were roomy and wide, leaving plenty of range for movement. Ample offerings of blazers—cropped, spacious or thoughtfully deconstructed—could easily be carried from day to night (as seen at Altuzarra, JW Anderson and Oscar de la Renta). In addition, larger-than-life tactual jackets (like Michael Kors, Boss and Coach) were insulated with shearlings, shaggy furs and an assortment of teddy fabrics.
Overall, basics served as the focal point—Leading to well-executed styles that were refined and exquisitely tailored. And that is exactly what women want right now. An unfussy wardrobe to deal with the chaos that is life.
