I don’t think anyone understands how important the book Curly Kids Rock is to our daughters, nieces and sisters. One of my duties as Aunty Charlotte is when the nieces come to visit we have a beauty session. My brothers have daughters who need instructions on how to take care of their hair earlier then later. Before books like this, it was just rituals passed down in the family.
Curly Kids Rock Positive Affirmations for Little Girls
Growing up in a mostly Caucasian neighbourhood in New York, one of the things I had to deal with growing up was my appearance. Especially with what some deemed unruly curly hair. The matriarchs in my family always stressed the importance of neat hair.
In school, if you sweat in the gym, your straightened hair was a frizz ball after class. Where a girl with curly hair has no time to properly re-do her hair, the only option was a bun. Which lead to being teased at lunch- no thank you.
Growing up, I wished we had a book like Curly Kids Rock, Positive affirmations for girls and curls. It would have been great to read with all my mixed raced cousins and I, on a typical Saturday for family visits. When I go to the Charlotte Mensah salon, she is my neighbourhood hair aunty, and that’s what it feels like on a Saturday in her salon.
I brought the book with me to the salon, because they are always giving tips on how to take care of curly hair. There are moms in the West London neighbourhood, they do not know how to take care of their daughter’s curly hair. I always say it takes practice, love and the right products.
This book found a home because on a typical Saturday curly-haired young ladies from all around Europe come to Aunty Charlotte for curly hair advice. That is why this book should be in London Salons like Charlotte’s. Where curly girls rock and look for some hair tips and love. While they patiently wait for their turns, there is a great book that will make them feel better to read while they wait.
Curly Kids Rock
As curly hair queens, we have to spread the love, understanding and qualities of our hair.
The book’s affirmations
Positive Affirmations for Little Girls
My hair is super big
My hair is bouncy
My hair is special
Make our little girls feel proud of the hair they were born with on their crow. It also teaches parents with children how to support and nurture the little one’s hair. We need more books like this so that others understand our hair too. We all needed a better explanation of our hair as we called #mixedrace hair issues.
This book is a recommended reading for after the tears go away after conditioning curls and de-tangling them. Because My name is Charlotte, I am a curly-haired princess, and Curly girls rock. On on too, best Aunty.
I certainly am not perfect myself, but our hair needs a little TLC, and that is the one lesson I learned from reading this book. I hope to spread the love with the young ladies who frequent my hair salon and all the young ladies with curly hair in my life. Let us know if you have other books to recommend.
