People wear wigs for a variety of reasons: to remedy hair loss, for costume parties, or for pure aesthetics. However, it can be a challenge to make a wig look like it grew right out of your head. High-quality wigs are ideal and immensely helpful, but sometimes, the price they carry are just steep, especially if they’ll only be worn for a short time.
Fortunately, there are tried-and-tested ways to make even a Halloween wig look natural or, at least, presentable. Try out these tips below on how to make a cheap wig look good.
1. Get a Wig Your Size
The first step to making a cheap wig look presentable is to actually get one that’s the right size for your head. To get the right measurements, start by taking a tape measure to the front of your hairline. Wrapping the tape measure behind your ear, down to your nape, up to the back of your other ear, until the tape meets its starting part at the hairline. The right wig size will not only look more natural but will also feel more comfortable.
2. Line Up the Wig with Your Natural Hairline
Not lining the wig up with your natural hairline only makes it more obvious that it isn’t your real hair. To do this correctly, put the wig on to just above the eyebrows, then slowly slide and adjust it back over your head. You may also leave out some of your own hair around the scalp to make the wig blend in more.
3. Pick a Wig Resembling Your Natural Texture
Although there may not be as many options to choose from among cheap wigs, still, it’s best to pick one that best resembles your hair’s natural texture. Avoid wigs that have very fine and very shiny textures as these tend to resemble a doll’s fake hair.
4. Avoid Using Anything Hot around Synthetic Wigs!
While wigs made of human hair can be styled with curling irons and hair straighteners, cheap wigs, on the other hand, cannot be. However, you may be able to get away with using hot water for styling needs. Hair straighteners and curling irons, on the other hand, are an absolute no-no.
5. Trim the Wig
Cut long wigs, and add in some layers to make them look more realistic and have more movement. Add bangs if you have to, but consider which hairstyles look good on you.
6. Spritz on Some Dry Shampoo
If your cheap wig has a shiny texture, you can make it look more realistic by applying dry shampoo on it. This will make it look more matted instantly and works really well for the tousled, just-woke-up look.
7. Apply a Mixture of Fabric Softener and Water to Condition the Hair
Cheaper wigs are often stiff and hard to style properly. The secret is to combine cold water and fabric softener in a spray bottle and then spray the mixture onto the wig. Air-dry it afterward for about 20 to 30 minutes. Doing this will help make the wig look more bouncy and easier to style.
8. Pluck a Few Hairs from the Center Part and Hairline to Make It Look More Natural
Wigs are commonly machine-made, which means that both the hairline and the center part may end up looking too “perfect.” To remedy this, pluck at least 20 to 30 hair strands from the center part and approximately 10 to 15 strands in various spots along the forehead. Do a quick check every five hair strands or so, though, as you may end up going overboard.
9. Add in Some Accessories
Cheap wigs often come with many imperfections, so what better way to cover them up than to use accessories? Headbands and hair clips can be used to hide the wing cap. Similarly, a scarf tied around the hairline can cover it, making it appear more natural.
Wigs can be fun to play around with, and there’s that feeling of satisfaction when the people that you encounter can’t even tell that you have a wig on. Nowadays, even cheap wigs can be made to look presentable! Have these tips encouraged you to try out a wig yet?
