Born and bred Irish designer, Richard Malone showcased his collection at LFW SS2020. Malone’s latest collection is intimate and personal. Spring/Summer 2020 is dedicated to Nellie. His inspiration is his nan Nellie Malone who passed a few months ago. Richard’s way of exploring his grief was through this collection.
Nellie Malone was one of the women in his life who strongly influenced him. She was an inspiration to Richard. Nellie painted these playful doodlings (such as peacocks, cats and so on) on till receipts and scraps of paper. Some of the dresses, mesh tee’s and so on, are reminders of the relationship he had with his nan Nellie.
He even had an exhibition featuring his nan’s Nellie’s artwork ‘Rinse, Repeat’ exhibition. The new-generation designer featured some of his Grandma Nellie playful doodlings on in a few looks. Although Nellie didn’t have a formal education, she had fashion knowledge. Being a seamstress herself, they would often discuss Malone’s collection. From tights, bodysuits, dresses laid the whimsical doodlings from Nellie.
Richard explores the idea of femininity and masculinity. In rich/pale blues, deep purple, yellow and green hues he explores ruched blouses, skirts and gowns. A few of the outwear have sheer panels, also exaggerated shoulders and sleeves.
Another of Malone’s inspiration is from sculpture. As you can see in his designs he explores the idea of femininity with examples of sheer ruched blouses and gowns and masculinity with colour block utility wear.
Utility & Unorthodox Meta Gala Wear
Malone is extremely talented. He is clearly dedicated to the craftsmanship of making clothes. It is a striking, elegant, voluminous, beautiful collection. As for the shoes, he collaborated with British shoemaker Malone Souliers. The jewellery is strips of metal coiled and curved by hand. It is curved into spiral necklaces, abstract earrings, and brooch pins.
It is one of the most beautiful heart-warming collections I have seen. I feel inspired to style some of his pieces. It is also the model in me that would love to play dress up in Malone’s collection. As a woman, the collection is sexy, modest, and STRONG. It is investment pieces. Did you know Richard also is an eco-designer. A vast majority of the collection is made up of recycled dancewear.
PSA ANNOUNCEMENT: Richard will be doing seasons on his own agenda. He will no longer be present for the traditional seasons (LFW Sept/Feb). In the future collections, he will no longer name them SS18 or AW17. They will be named after their presentation date.
