The straightener is a large clip-shaped device, consisting of two hot plates, and therefore the purpose and straightens your hair by removing ripples, curls and frizz. To straighten your hair with a straightener, you must wick by wick, sliding the hotplates along your strand of hair.
The straightener consists of several elements:
- The hotplates (with an insulating edge to avoid burning your scalp);
- An insulating cladding so that you can hold the iron without burning yourself;
- The power cord: it is often rotatable for a better grip of the device;
- The temperature control knob (dimmer) : on some models it is possible to lock it;
- A thermo-protective storage pouch;
- Sometimes an LCD display showing the temperature, present on some models only.
- Sometimes the product is sold with additional accessories, such as a comb to help smoothing, a rotating tip.
What are the different types of straighteners?
There are many types of straighteners, which differ not only in their technology, but also in the coating of the plates, the dimensions of the device. It all depends on you which type of hair straightener you want to buy. You also need to very careful what type of hairs you have and which one will suits your hair. Also you need to be aware of the market as well as the buyers trend that what exactly people are buying from the market. This will allow you to know about the top product of the market and then you can choose one from them after seeing you needs and requirements. Anyhow let’s check the different types of hair straighteners. The straighteners differ in the technology used. We thus find the following types of straighteners:
Steam straightener: The steam straightener diffuses moist heat into your hair, hydrating it. This system makes it possible to smooth your hair without damaging it, and even to make it even softer and shinier. This is the technology that lasts the longest: with a vapor straightener, you will not need to redo your smoothing every day!
The ionic straightener: the ionic straightener diffuses negative ions in your hair, thus counterbalancing the natural emission of positive ions of your hair. This not only helps fight against static electricity, but also revitalize and shine your hair dry, dull and damaged by closing the scales of hair fibers. It is after an ionic smoothing that your hair will better absorb the care (oils, creams, masks …).
The Wet & Dry straightener: this type of straightener can be used on dry hair as well as on wet hair, without damaging them.
The straightener 2 in 1: this type of straightener not only smoothes the hair, but also curl or waving. The difference comes from the shape of the plates, which are curved while the plates of the classic hair straighteners are smooth and flat. These curly hair straighteners are particularly popular with people with straight hair because they can give volume.
The infrared straightener: rarer, this straightener allows diffusing the heat not to burn the hair. This straightener saves time because only one passage is enough for an optimal result.
The different types of coatings
The straighteners can also vary in the coating of the plates:
The ceramic: This material distributes the heat evenly over the plates, and thus better protects your hair. The ceramic plates are ideal for people who have fine or normal hair, because they slide very well on this type of hair. The straighteners can be made of three types of ceramic: white ceramic (the most common), yellow ceramics (white ceramics with treatment), and black ceramic or glass-ceramic (known for shining hair, it is ideal for frizzy hair);
The Teflon: this material allows making very strong and sturdy plates and shining hair;
The tourmaline: a semi-precious stone, used in coating on ionic hair straighteners because it is naturally ionized and therefore has antistatic properties. Tourmaline is particularly indicated for dry, damaged or weakened hair, especially chemically treated hair;
The titanium: This material is very strong and resistant, such as Teflon; and allows the heat to be diffused homogeneously, like ceramics. It is suitable for all types of hair, except damaged or colored hair.
Straightener with or without cord
The traditional hair straighteners are connected to a power outlet with a wire, often along more than 2 meters; but there is also straightener’s wireless, cheaper and more convenient to go on a trip. These straighteners run on battery power and can be recharged anywhere, on a power outlet or even on the cigarette lighter! In general, these straighteners are very versatile, suitable for all types of hair and with an adjustable temperature.
