I’d never really thought about staying at resorts in Tenerife, Spain before until I heard about CLC World Resorts & Hotels and their collection of resorts there. It was a particularly cold, wet November day in Britain, and the prospect of a short flight to a sunshine island where we could arrive in time for an alfresco lunch, followed by Sangria sundowners, seemed irresistible – and so it proved.
That first visit was several years ago. We’ve returned to resorts in Tenerife, Spain, many times since, and always appreciated the ease of the journey (about four hours), the warmth of the sunshine (average year-round temperature of 22°C), and the comfort of our surroundings.

I’ve been to all the CLC World Tenerife resorts, and each has something different to offer. We tend to stay at CLC Monterey Tenerife, which is perched on a hillside above the famous Playa de Las Americas, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. In the distance, surfers enjoy the waves in the sunshine, and on the horizon, the island of La Gomera is sometimes visible.
Of all the resorts in Tenerife, Spain, one of the things I love about CLC World is that their apartments are so carefully thought out and come with every home comfort, which means you can hunker down in the privacy of your own accommodation and cater for yourself, if you feel like it, or you can take advantage of the delicious food in the restaurants. We tend to do a bit of both.
One of the many things that surprised us about Tenerife holidays was how much there is to do. We’ve been on the Submarine Safari more than once: a great adventure which takes you almost to the ocean floor for a close-up view of the creatures of the underwater world.

Then there’s the cable car ride to the top of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest volcano. Or you can scare yourself silly at Siam Park, with all sorts of adventurous rides. If you visit La Gomera, (the ferry takes around an hour), be sure to ask about the whistle language which is indigenous to the island. We were given a fascinating demonstration of this ancient method of communicating across its deep ravines and valleys.
It’s also worth driving to some of the nearby villages for lunch. Our favourite is Los Abrigos, which is only 15 minutes from CLC Monterey and has a fantastic array of fish restaurants, set in the prettiest little harbour. Some even have their own boats, so you can practically see your lunch being landed. It doesn’t come fresher than that!
If you have time on your Tenerife holidays, head north to the less populated top of the island, where the landscape is dramatically different – much lusher and greener.
Finally, don’t write off Playa de Las Americas. Like the rest of Tenerife, the town has shed its old image and moved on. Its shopping centre is now seriously upmarket, boasting every designer label you can think of. We head to the fountains in the town centre, where, every evening, the water jets are finely tuned to classical music – it’s a sheer delight.
Just across the road is the most wonderful theatre. I never imagined we would watch ballet, opera or the most amazing Flamenco performance in Tenerife, but that’s what the theatre offers and we love it.
And so, as well as sun, sea and Sangria, Tenerife holidays offer you culture, outdoor activities and all the comfort you could ask for at one of CLC World’s resorts in Tenerife, Spain.
Go and see for yourselves! You won’t regret it.
