It took only three collections into New York Fashion Week to realize that this fall’s jacket has an agenda of its own. Almost every brand (in both New York, London, Milan and Paris) presented one (or more) eye-catching jackets just begging to be stroked. In a true show of diversity, iterations were presented in the form of bold-hued plush furs, shaggy bombers, woolly volumes, fuzzy animal prints and mixed media mashups.
Why have designers collectively concluded that we need to envelope ourselves in the fashionable version of a Snuggie? If last month’s arctic surge engulfing America’s Midwest is any indication, climate change will only continue to spiral further into extremity—Forcing us to bundle up Yeti-style next winter. Or perhaps hiding beneath the comfort of our sartorial blankets is a reflection of the current zeitgeist. Increasingly urgent pleas to curb wasteful consumerism, the terrifying floating statistic that by the year 2050 we’ll have more plastic than fish in the ocean, Brexit’s uncertainty—There’s plenty in the news to incite anxiety in any one of us.
It makes sense that we would reach for comfort during times of distress—Plush pillows, snuggly teddy bears, cozy sweaters, comfy blankets. Touchable jackets are the new fashion armour, swapping power shoulders for textures that we can throw on to help us attack the day. How fitting that teddy coats where everywhere this season itself?
Just like ugly dad sneakers and track suits, palpable jackets have snuck their way into our hearts, proving they offer two things we all really want: comfort and a lewk. Admit it, these trends are all just “fashion cheats.” You can be dressed as casual, comfortable and basic underneath, but if you’ve thrown a concoction of rainbow ostrich feathers (like Prabal Gurung’s FW19 offering) on top of it, it’s fashion. Comfort and style in tandem is like having your cake and eating it too—The epitome of today’s modern empowerment. When it comes to touchability, go plush, furry, shaggy, piecey, chunky, nubby—whatever scintillates your tactual senses. However, I’m going to end on a personal note: If you’re going to go furry, please choose faux! They are remarkably deceiving in both look and feel. Now, bundle up!
