“Fashion fades, style is eternal” the late Yves Saint Laurent said those words and we couldn’t agree more with him. As fun as fashion can be, sometimes it’s a little difficult to develop your style. Maybe it’s because of the budget you’re working with, or religious restrictions or sometimes, it could be something as simple as a lack of confidence.
As a stylist for over a decade and based in New York City, I wanted to share with you some tips on how to develop your style and building a wardrobe you LOVE.
First things first, who do you want to be? They say dress for the job you want, not have. So identify where you see yourself career wise and write that down. Then, identify the lifestyle you would like. Are you a weekend-get-away kind of gal? Are you a socialist that thrives of off an over-booked schedule? Or are you more of a beach bum and just want to enjoy the coast? Whatever lifestyle you have/want is what you should be shopping for.
Second, once you identify your ideal job/lifestyle, let’s get to know your body type. There are four types and depending on your silhouette, there are pieces you should gravitate to that will compliment you best. Here they are:
Third, let’s find what inspires you most! What do you love to do? Who is your favorite celebrity style? Are you an art major? Anything and everything can be inspirational, you just have to figure out who/what you identify with best. For me, I love anything leather and studded so my ultimate inspiration always comes from Alexander McQueens collection.
Forth, now that you have identified what you love, your body type and what inspires you, let’s start shopping! Here are some of my favorite go-to spots for shopping:
Jeans: G Star, Paige Denim, J Brand & American Eagle
Casual Tops: Splendid, BCBG Max Azria, NM & Bergdorf Contemporary & Zara
Cocktail Dresses: BCBG Max Azria, Marciano, ASOS, Elie Tahari & Ted Baker.
Tailored Separates: Tory Burch, BCBG Max Azria, Ted Baker, Saks, Banana Republic & Elie Tahari.
( Let us know in the comments below who you love & why!!)
Last but not least ALWAYS trust yourself and don’t be afraid to try something new. You wear what you buy so the next time you step out to shop, pay attention to what you pick up and make sure it identifies with your lifestyle and ultimate career. Too often, women get discouraged and shift to simply wearing work out gear for everyday. Try a new look! Invest in comfortable flats (AGL has really good ones), pair it with skinny jeans and a white tee. BOOM! Or how about that maxi dress you bought a few months ago and now it’s just hanging in your closet? Bring it out!!
It’s never to late to revamp your image and break out of that shell of yours!!! All it takes is a little inspiration and a whole lotta’ confidence. Now go to that closet of yours, pick out something you HAVEN’T worn in years and put it to use!! Have fun figuring out who you are and above all, embrace ALL that you are.
