Before there was a grunge trend there was pre-pre-grunge trends, The Buffalo Girls and the designer of choice was Vivienne Westwood. She made the look trendy, and our heroine’s Neneh Cherry & MADONNA gave the look street creed . I Love the ’80s. THE BUFFALLO girls style began…with one of the very early collections from Vivienne Westwood (in collaboration with her beau at the time Malcolm McLaren) back in Paris in 1981-. If you look closely at the style, including the makeup it’s very androgyny, it looks very pre-pre-grunge and crosses all gender lines. Maybe one of the reasons why this trend has come back, fashion without borders for the masses.
For the imaginative collection Vivienne Westwood was by a photograph of dancing Peruvian women wearing bowler hats and full skirts, dancing with their babies tied on their back. The pattern was taken from a woodblock print on a record cover. The wrap skirt: printed cotton, with machine embroidered flowers and knitted trim Underskirt: hand-dyed synthetic wadding Hooded top: perforated cotton Mountain hat: wool Brassiere: satin and leather. Lingerie as outerwear was born. Also important were the shoes. Her SACK SHOES are key pieces to getting the look.
The Buffalo Girls Trend F/W 2015
This fall the ’80s Trend Buffalo Girls is back in the limelight. New Wave is back, an era when everyone danced to the same drum. The key to this look is an oversized coat, long prairie like skirt, hoods, hats and plaid. Its time to dig deep into the archives of Vivienne Westwood, a female pioneer of punk, her Buffalo Girls (Nostalgia of Mud) collection provides the palate for the season: it’s wild rustic and rebellious urban chic. I guess we can blame Pharrell Williams and the hat he wore from the collection. Your best bet to get the look, is to head to a vintage shop.
