Some people might be displeased by the Défilé du Jour, but we certainly aren’t. The most outstanding piece was the brown pleated leather skirt dress that reminded us of Thanksgiving. For Fendi Spring/Summer 2015 collection Karl Lagerfeld left the shores of Italy and went to North America for inspiration. Native pride was found on each garment and the accessories of course were the ultimate show stoppers. Although he did not create a headdress, we did spot ponytail holders made out of leather and constructed into feathers; destined to be one of the next Fendi accessories that comes with a waiting list. Outfits came down the runway in hues of brown, orange, red and baby blue, all ready for game day.
All the beautiful colours were a reflection that an early fall was approaching. Many might ask where the designer was going with this season? Sometimes people get offended when they see traditional clothing on the runway, but why we ask? Fashion is sometimes a reminder of where we as a people come from and what we contribute to society. Karl seems to have his heart on the reservation and ready to have a pow pow with his favorite models of the moment. Jackets were cropped, pants were slouched, skirts were hiked. There was denim, which is a first time on a Fendi catwalk and Lagerfeld has come up with a new leitmotif for his girls – the orchid. First introduced in Fall 2014 in corsage form as the romantic echo of another era, it is now printed, woven, embroidered, appliquéd, and even sculpted from suede for SS 2015. The garments were comfortable and flexible for every warrior princess who needs to attack her prey in the forest. Leather skins had vertical slashes to create an optical illusion with the embellishment of feathers. A Fendi show would not be a Fendi show without fur, reminiscent of a distant cold winters day in North America where they would trap the animal and use every bit of it. “She’s a completely new sort of girl,” he said post-show. “Not like anyone who’s come before.”
Each model was gifted the new incarnation of the Karl Lagerfield key chain accessories perfect for today’s urban nomads. Karl has a new tribe and it reflects the culture of today. As many young women struggle with issues of being who they are on the runway, he makes it okay to be true to yourself, like Cara Delevingne, as she walked exclusively for Fendi in Milan. The cast was a mix of it girl models, reality TV stars within all the colors of the rainbow. We love that Karl stays on the pulse of who’s the new PYT.
