Dior To Support 2014 Guggenheim International Gala in New York
For the second year in a row, Dior will sponsor the Guggenheim International Gala. The Guggenheim International Gala annual benefit is a two-night event that is scheduled to take place on Nov. 5 and 6, 2014 in New York City. This year, the event, which is often referred to as GIG, will honour Carrie Mae Weems, whose retrospective was on view at the Guggenheim last spring, as well as Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker of the German artist group Zero and Beijing-based contemporary artist Wang Jianwei,WWD reported. Zero’s work will be featured in “Zero: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s-60s” from Oct. 10 to Jan. 7, and Jianwei will be the focus of the exhibition “Wang Jianwei: Time Temple,” which will be on view from Oct. 31 to Feb. 16.
Its common fashion knowledge that the Dior creative director Raf Simons is a well-known collector of art, and he often references artists and their work in his designs, so for the second time around fashion meets art. It makes total sense for the fashion house to sponsor an event of this nature because both the house and the creative mind behind the house are so passionate about art.
There’s been a long relationship between art and [Dior]. It was one of the first things we discussed with Raf [Simons] when we met to talk about the Dior contract
Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano told Business of Fashion in 2013 when it was announced Dior would sponsor that year’s GIG.
We have 3,000 people journey to our atelier every year, and I see that these young women and men are so excited to see the workshops and the magic behind the clothes. Raf and the new collection are really successful in the States and a lot of great things are happening in New York. I hope that this is the start of a long relationship with the Guggenheim,” Sidney Toledano .

About The xx
Since their 2009 debut album xx—quietly made at night over the course of two years—the South London trio of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith has been upheld for its refined expressions of teenage desire and anxiety. NPR has described The xx’s music as “delicately crafted so that every softly ringing note, and every aching second of dead air, hits like a cymbal crash.” Grantland has called them “the most exciting quiet band in the world.” The xx comment, “We have always loved visiting the Guggenheim whilst on tour in New York, and it is an honor to be able to support the museum by playing at the Gala Pre-party. Thank you to the Guggenheim and to Dior for giving us this opportunity.”
About the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has since expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (currently in development). Looking to the future, the Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that take contemporary art, architecture, and design beyond the walls of the museum, including with the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and with The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation. More information about the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation can be found at guggenheim.org.
