A Knitting Revolution?
Its New Year again, and come rain or shine, the constant struggle of ‘what should I do?’ looms above our heads. I’m afraid to admit however that this year I have escaped the dreaded task and booked a small break in Aberdeen with the lovely other half. As happy as that makes me I now have to decide what to take and what to wear! Knowing full well that Scotland is cold anyway and the BBC weather man seems to think that the outer-skirts of Scotland will be very very cold indeed, I am left with no choice but to search high and low for a new warm wardrobe! Step back a few years ago and this may have been a hard task, but thanks to the rise in knitwear and knitwear designers I have found buying big chunky knits from vintage and charity shops around London most enjoyable.
Having reported many a time on knitting myself on the Make Lemonade blog, I thought I would share the love for the medium with you all too!
We have now come to know designers such as Mark Fast, Louise Goldin, Yang Du and Derek Lawlor using Knit at its best, the fashion world is now beginning to realise that balls of yarn can become so much more than your grandmothers dreaded festive jumpers. But where will the trend go now? Its easy enough for us Londoner’s to embrace the warm and fuzzy, but what of the fashion dwellers located in more sunny parts of the globe? Step in Disa Treutiger a new knitwear designer who studied at Beckmans College of Fashion. She takes inspiration from John Locke, and the human phenomenon that is feelings and emotions. Interested? Well so was I having seen the versatility and innovation in her 2009 collection I cant wait to see more!

To Be Someone, By Disa Treutiger 2009
Using sheer fabrics as a base for her work Disa creates sexy light weight designs sure to please us all, even the most Gaga of us (I know she has taken over the world!).

Wool and The Gang Kit
But Disa’s collection is just one example of the progress knitting has made, another trend has emerged, one I believe to have been fueled by the decrease in finances and an increase in creativity and resourcefulness; Home knitting kits by companies such Wool and The Gang are empowering the masses to create warm and original knits in their own time and homes!with their ‘fabricated tales’ of fun companies such as Net- A -Porter and Anthropology have all joined the knitting parade!
